“LET HIM SELL HIS GARMENT AND BUY A SWORD” These words of the Lord in Luke 22: 36 are striking, pointing to the need to dispose of certain things if the Holy Spirit’s power is to be experienced. An older man might feel that he has a certain experience and status and just rely on that. If he does, he will lack

power and effectiveness. Far better to sell his garment and buy a sword. Then, as he is in faith and dependence, the unmistakable power of the Spirit will be manifest. A young man may have a clear mind and good powers of expression, and rely on that. Better to sell that garment and buy a sword. Then, as Paul, says, it will be “not the word ... but the power”, 1

Corinthians 4: 19. Paul had thoroughly worked out this matter. He says that his word and his preaching were “not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power”, 1 Corinthians 2: 4. He had sold his garment and bought a sword.
