THE DOORKEEPERS’ TRUST In 1 Chronicles 9 we are told the services which were entrusted to the doorkeepers. These services were by no means limited to controlling entrance to the house, though surely the doorkeepers would impart a sense of welcome to those who approached suitably, as well as ensuring that no one unsuitable entered the house. But they had a privileged responsibility much wider than that. They opened the house every morning, and under their charge were the treasuries of the house, and the instruments of service, which they brought in by number. They were also over the vessels, the holy instruments, the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices. Each morning as they opened the house all would therefore be in readiness for the service to begin, with its holy instruments, the fresh appreciation of Christ typified in the fine flour, the holy stimulation for God suggested in the wine, the fresh flow of the Holy Spirit indicated in the oil, and what speaks of the fragrance of Christ resting upon the saints. It is also said that the doorkeepers “stayed round about the house of God during the night”.

Let us, by the Spirit, commit ourselves to this charge so as to ensure the constant maintenance of what is delightful to God. Thus, as the saints assemble, all would be in order and readiness for the service (whatever its character) to proceed in the liberty, harmony, fulness, and fragrance suited to the house, and so delightful to Him who dwells in it.
