“ESCAPE TO THE MOUNTAIN”—Urgently warning Lot to escape from doomed Sodom, the angels said, “Escape for thy life—look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain—escape to the mountain, lest thou perish”, Genesis 19: 17. But Lot sought a compromise. He thought he would die if he went to the mountain—“Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is small—I pray thee, let me escape thither—is it not small?” We may be prepared to leave the world in its grosser aspects, but seek to retain its more attractive forms. “And it is small”—just a little of the world! But God has put the greatest possible moral distance between the believer and the world in all its aspects. This distance can be measured only by “the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom” (or through which), says Paul, “the world is crucified to me, and I to the world”, Galatians 6: 14.

Let us be obedient and loyal to the teaching of the cross, and thus prove that God is well able to sustain us in life and enjoyment with all the fulness of His world and His city.
