CHILDREN CROWNED

It is not an unknown thing for a child to wear a crown or its equivalent. English history tells us that one of the kings of many centuries ago was, at the age of nine, crowned with his mother's bracelet; the real crown had been lost in the sea. As to biblical history, Josiah, one of the kings of Judah was only eight years old when called to the throne. For many years this king "did what was right in the eyes of Jehovah". Before this there was a young king, Manasseh by name, who was crowned at the age of twelve. Sad to say, he had a long reign of wickedness.

It is a happy thing to remember that Jesus was born a king although He had no royal crown. When He died He was crowned in derision with a crown of thorns. These thorns are thought to have been from a plant having pliable stems with thorns and also leaves like ivy. An old word for a crown is the same as the name of Stephen. What an overcomer he was! To his Lord and Master he was faithful unto death and has a martyr's crown.

The epistle of James refers to a crown of life to be received by all who resist temptation by keeping a good conscience. Peter's expectation was a crown of glory, to be given to him by the Chief Shepherd, the Lord Jesus. The saints who form the flock of God need to be cared for in various ways; the youngest believer can have part in this. Even a "cup of cold water" given as refreshment will find its true reward. Paul wrote of his hope of a crown of righteousness. It was laid up for him and will be displayed when the Lord Jesus will appear again. All who love Him and look for Him to come will receive such a crown. Will you be amongst them?
