A mariner uses dead reckoning if he has lost sight of any fixed points of reference, on land or in the heavens.  The reckoning depends on accurate measures of the ship’s speed, and the strength of cross currents and headwinds; a mariner would only work with it until he can look outside and get his bearings again.—EDITOR
