The Spirit is the witness. Not a cloud above, not a spot within (Hymn 22), the latter is by the water, the blood removes the clouds above, all is clear before the throne of God. Often there is a clear apprehension of the value of the blood before God as to one’s sins, but the effect of the water as relieving the heart from the unclean state in which man is by nature is not known. Not a spot within it really comes about by efficacious application of the water ...

I believe the witness of the water is much less understood than the witness of the blood. In actual experience it is but little known, I fear; the conscience is merely eased, but how much is there freedom in one’s mind and heart from the man that sinned?

I think of it every Saturday. The service of God beginning away in the south-east, in New Zealand, then Australia, then in South Africa, then right around in Europe and America, beginning Saturday and continuing on until Monday night, extending on to the Pacific, when we are sleeping … There is power as soon as it begins and God acts with it. So here, there is One in the very centre of the moral universe looking after these prayers all the time ... all passing through this priestly Angel. As the youngest child prays before he retires to bed at night, or in the morning, or in the wakeful hours, this glorious Person is looking after this department of prayer.

The perfecting of praise is to be in the mouths of babes and sucklings. So the mouths should be cared for and the filth of the street should not be allowed to pass in and out of them, and in the schools, too, they require this care. They should be carefully and holily kept for the truth, for the children of believing parents are holy, in a

potential sense, and should be kept on that principle, so that in their time they may be perfecting the praises of God. The parents come in for a great place, especially the mothers.

That there is a God, a heathen might, at least ought to know—that He was here revealed to me in Jesus is my glory and joy, and eternal life as a christian—that He who alone could do it and be uncontaminated, laid His cleansing and unsoiled hand on me as a leper, saying, “I will, be thou clean”, is my salvation and my thankfulness for ever.
