TWO SHORT STATEMENTS

John 21:1-7,9-12 (to “dine”)

I just have a few simple thoughts about this scripture, beloved brethren. In it, recovery comes about, and that is a wonderful matter. Recovery comes about through the divine resources which there are in Christ. In this expedition, Peter and those who went with him accomplished nothing. They go off to fish, and we know what has been said about the result, ‘night, nakedness and nothing’1. Nothing was accomplished, but recovery comes about when the Lord is recognised. That is a wonderful thing.

John is the one who recognises the Lord Jesus; he said, “It is the Lord”. There are two short statements in this passage – one is, “It is the Lord”, and the other is “Come and dine”. That is just my simple thought, beloved brethren. The Lord has His own resources and he is able to bring about recovery through those resources. What recovery there is! I love these few simple words in this verse, “It is the Lord”. What it is to recognise the Lord! He must have looked upon Peter, who at this moment did not recognise Him, but John did. John must have looked upon Him; there has been plenty said about that already tonight, and I would just add this touch, “It is the Lord”. How definite John was – it was the result of love, because John was the one who Jesus loved.

And then these three words, “Come and dine”. I love these words. It was the third time that the Lord had manifested Himself to them. Think of Him saying “Come and dine” – there was no word of recrimination or anything like that, but just simply, “Come and dine”.

I cannot say much more, dear brethren. I am just impressed by these two statements. “It is the Lord”; we should have some sense of that as together now, and then “Come and dine”. How much there is for our souls, what feasting there is. May we be encouraged by these few simple thoughts, for His name’s sake.
