“MY HIGH PLACES”—We may learn a lesson from the blackbird. Morning and night he loves to perch on the highest point of a tree and pour out his song. For a believer, too, it is a good thing to resort to his highest point and let his soul go out to God in response. In an evil, day, Habakkuk speaks of “my high places” (Habakkuk 3: 19). We are to have our high places, and God delights to hear our song of praise from them.

“SET … BY HIM”—When the disciples reasoned who should be the greatest of them, “Jesus ... having taken a little child set it by him”, (Luke 9: 47). That place may be yours and mine.

Could you want a better place? You may be as near to Him as you wish; have as much of His company as you desire. Would that little child have the slightest interest in the discussion as to who should be greatest? It would be wholly content, and that contentedness would preclude all ambition and rivalry.

SKILL AND FERVOUR—“Play skilfully with a loud sound” (Psalm 33: 3). The Spirit would delight to make us skilled in the service of God, to be marked by refinement of spiritual feeling, and to be able to contribute to the fine harmonies of the greatest of all services. But along with skill is to go fervour, holy exuberance—and outpouring of soul. So the service is spontaneous and is to move the depths of our beings as we call upon all that is within us to bless God (Psalm 103: 1).
