‘I DO IT FOR LOVE!’ We stopped at a petrol pump outside a country shop. The lady in charge was very busy, evidently managing both shop and pump. After serving some customers in the shop, she hurried out to us. ‘You’re busy!’, we commented. Brightly she answered, ‘I do it for love—I do it for my husband’. That set us thinking about love as the greatest motive in the universe. The believer has learned divine love and, by the Spirit, it is to become formative in him. Paul says, “Let all things ye do be done in love”, 1 Corinthians 16: 14. That great love chapter, 1 Corinthians 13, shows that, apart from love, the greatest knowledge, the greatest self-sacrifice, are worth nothing. But where love is the pure spring and motive of any little service, how precious it is to heaven!

“GIVE THYSELF TO READING” Following the death of Mrs. G. Wellershaus, of Endbach, some of her copies of this magazine were returned to us and it was affecting to look over them and see the diligence with which they had been read, and the reaction in her on soul. For instance, some passages relating to communion with divine Persons had been underlined. One of them was a reference to the entry in the index to Mr. Darby’s ‘Letters’, ‘The good of being alone with God’. In another place a brother had commented in relation to 2 Peter 1: 21—‘Mr. Darby actually uses the word they “spake under the power of the Holy Spirit”, but in his note he says, ‘spake as borne by’ the Holy Spirit, almost as if the Holy Spirit was carrying them along’. In the margin our sister had quoted the line, ‘My soul is all transported’. That was her reaction to the word, the enlargement of the impression as it echoed in her soul. That surely is the way to read, our affections and minds sensitive and ready to respond to the impressions presented. There is much for divine pleasure in that.
