THE LESSON OF LOT Lot’s name carries the meaning of what is covered, or concealed. He was a righteous man (2 Peter 2: 7), but he so effectively covered up his inward feelings and convictions that he became part of Sodom. That is what happens to a christian who does not show his true colours—he drops to the level of the world and is in dire danger of becoming part of it. In contrast, Abram, strengthened by the priestly service of Melchisedec, and then immediately faced by the seductive proposal of the king of Sodom (Genesis 14: 21), says boldly, “I have lifted up my hand to Jehovah, the Most High God—possessor of heavens and earth” and he is preserved by his own personal link with God, and by stating it clearly. It is like a believer confessing the name of the Lord Jesus and proving salvation in it.
