THE FACE OF JESUS CHRIST
A. J. Gaskin
Thy face, O Lord, was full of grace,
Tenderness, pity for a race
Ravaged by sin, by Satan bound.
Who Thee a blest Deliverer found.
Thy heart was by compassion moved,
Thy healing hand stretched out in love.
That face shone brightly as the sun
In majesty before Thine own,
Filling the holy mount with light,
Thy visage changed, Thy garments white;
With joy the Father’s voice could own,
‘This is My well beloved Son’.
And yet Thou didst not hide Thy face
From shame and spitting; in Thy grace
Thou didst endure man’s bitter scorn,
Thy visage marred by blows and torn
By thorns with which Thy brow was crowned;
Of those to whom Thou cam’st, disowned.
But now as risen, Lord, we see
Such living traits shine forth in Thee;
Thy face is seen in radiant light
Th’effulgence of God’s glory bright,
Th’expression of His substance, Lord;
Worthy art Thou to be adored.
Jesus, we long to see Thy face,
No longer dimly through a glass,
But face to face, to know as we
Are known and in reality
To see Thee as Thou art; come then,
As Thou hast promised, Lord. Amen.
