“Whatsoever ye do in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus”. This will settle 999 cases out of 1,000. If you are questioning whether you shall do a thing or not, just ask yourself. Am I going to do it in the name of the Lord Jesus? It will settle it at once. Thus if a person says, What harm is there in my doing such-and-such a thing? I ask, Are you going to do it in the name of the Lord Jesus? … It is the test of the state of the heart. If my eye is single, if the purpose of my heart is all right, I get here what settles every question—it tests my heart. I wanted to know the right path, and it is as simple as ABC. If my heart is not upon Christ, I shall endeavour to do my own will; and this is not God’s will. There is the constant uniform rule which clearly judges every path and circumstance—am I simply doing it in the name of the Lord Jesus?

J. N. Darby (‘Coll. Wrtgs.’, Vol. 16, p.157)

“Without holiness no man shall see the Lord”. Difficulties will arise, crises come up among the saints—who knows His way? He who has holiness, and he who has holiness sees the Lord. It is a question of where the Lord is in the crisis, and who sees Him but he who has holiness; so, beloved, the importance of holiness in a practical way is apparent, but it is specially apparent at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

J. Taylor (Vol. 15, p.44)

Enoch ... walked with God; he has developed as man. Let us all note that, especially those, of us who are fathers and mothers; we cannot influence our children aright if we do not walk with God ourselves. That is the secret. We need the closet to pray for them, and then to go out to them and pray with and read with them.

J. Taylor (Vol. 18, p.447)

What a comfort it is to know that God thinks of us, and arranges all for us, though we fail to think of Him! There is not a day, not a moment, but God is thinking of us, and He is above all the plottings of Satan. He will take care of His people. Do they want food? He sends them manna. Guidance? there is the pillar going before them. Do they come to Jordan? there is the ark there. Have they enemies in the land? there is Joshua to overcome for them. He deals with them in the way of discipline when they need it, as He did with Jacob. He humbled him, but gave him the blessing in the end. What a thought this ought to give us of the love of God, when we thus see His activity in goodness to us all the way through! What comfort to know He is for us, out of the spring and principle of His own love!

J. N. Darby (‘Coll. Wrtgs.’, Vol. 19, p.297)

I believe that prayer has as much to do as any other item with the building of wise women (Proverbs 14: 1); however limited one may be in one’s circumstances or one’s body, one can always pray, and I do not know of any service more effective than prayer ... I may not have gift or, through physical limitations, may not have opportunity to attend the meetings, or even to hear what is said, but I can pray.
