PREPARING OUR WAYS When Jotham became king of Judah at the age of twenty-five it was a critical time. His father, king Uzziah, had, after a good reign, in which he sought God and was prospered, become lifted up with pride. He usurped the service of the priests by offering incense upon the altar and was stricken with leprosy, dying a leper. Now his son Jotham was on the throne. How would he reign? We are told in 2 Chronicles 27 that “he did what was right in the sight of Jehovah” and that he “became strong, for he prepared his ways before Jehovah his God”.

What a fine expression! He did nothing without consulting his God. Every part of his life, all his plans and arrangements, were “prepared” in the divine presence. Is it like that with you and me? It is a poor life that just drifts from one day to the next; the only safe and wise course is to plan the details, and the general course, of our lives before God. We have the word in Psalm 50: 23, “To him that ordereth his way will I shew the salvation of God”. Thus will He preserve those who walk in His fear.
