CHRIST’S GREATNESS SEEN IN ISAAC

Chapters 22 to 26 of Genesis present aspects of Christ’s greatness seen in Isaac. In chapter 22 we have sonship in its perfection—“They went both of them together” (Genesis 22: 6, 8)—wondrously fulfilled in the Lord’s coming here, who could say—“I and the Father are one”, John 10: 30. The reference by Abraham in Genesis 22: 8 to God providing Himself with the sheep indicates Christ’s greatness sacrificially, in line with John the baptist’s testimony to the Lamb of God. In Genesis 24 Isaac typifies Christ where He is, given all things by the Father, so that the servant, a type of the Spirit, owns him to Rebecca as “my master”. The Spirit is sent by Christ as well as by the Father (John 15: 26). In Genesis 25 Abraham permits of no rival in sending away his other seed from Isaac his son, who in chapter 26 receives a hundredfold—“And the man became great, and he became continually greater, until he was very great” (Genesis 26: 13). So Christ must fill everything, as it is said, “Christ everything, and in all”, Colossians 3: 11. He will receive a full yield according to the counsels of the blessed God.
