MUSINGS

HOMEWORK’ Everyday happenings often have their lessons. Recently a schoolgirl told me she was not doing so well as her brother in their studies. ‘I suppose I’m not so intelligent as he is’, she commented. A little later came another comment, ‘I have thought of another factor that might affect my not doing better than ... I do not do as much homework as he does’.

It is sometimes like that in spiritual things. I may see someone making headway in the things of the Lord and think that he, or she, has some special advantage over me. But the real reason probably is that I have not been so keen on my ‘homework’—prayer and communion, reading, and going over with the Lord what He says to us in the comings together of the saints. Paul says, “To each one of us has been given grace according to the measure of the gift of the Christ”, Ephesians 4: 7. We have each had a direct bestowal of grace from Christ.

Let us be diligent in using it so that our progress may be manifest to all (see 1 Timothy 4: 15). In that passage Paul is really urging Timothy to be diligent in his ‘homework’.
