DIVINE ARRANGEMENT We were recently given a floral arrangement. The elements in it are very simple dried grasses, leaves, and the like—but the combined effect is beautiful. Now if I were to begin changing that arrangement around, or take it to pieces and try out my own ideas, the result would be disastrous. All the skilful placing, blending, and balance would be lost.

It is a simple reminder of the divine skill with which the saints are put together: “God has set the members, each one of them in the body, according as it has pleased him”, 1 Corinthians 12: 18. You and I have been set where we are in divine wisdom. (Some, indeed, are set in solitude, but their place in the body is very real). May we respect this wise ordering. Let us earnestly seek to work together, making the very most of our God-given brethren and valuing His work in them, for He has chosen the company in which we are. “Let each one of us please his neighbour with a view to what is good, to edification. For the Christ also did not please himself”, Romans 15: 2. Let us remember that we are set together not only for our blessing and cheer, but for His own joy and pleasure. He delights to see brethren dwelling together in unity, and He views His own work in its great variety, yet harmony, as the saints blend together. There He commands His blessing, according to Psalm 133.
