“SO TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS” (PSALM 90)

G. H. Brown

A year once again has passed o’er us—

How swiftly the moments have flown!

The days yet remaining before us,

Our Father, Thou knowest alone.

Though harassed by sore tribulations

In Thee our resources, we prove—

Our—dwelling in all generations—

Our refuge that nought can remove.

In wisdom our path Thou ordainest,

As Father Thou knowest our frame;

For ever unchanged Thou remainest,

Through numberless, ages the: same.

Our days, though so rapidly passing;

Have infinite value and worth,

When crowned with Thy blessing, surpassing

The riches and glory of earth.

May this be our portion unceasing

At all times in Thee to confide,

Through every experience increasing

In wealth that shall ever abide.

For now is the time of tuition,

So teach us to number our days;—

But soon we shall see the fruition

Of all Thine unsearchable ways.

For brief is the span of life’s story,

And soon will our journey be done,

And then we shall rest in the glory

Where Christ is the Centre and Sun.

In a scene where Thy glory unshrouded

Shines forth with ineffable light,

A region of brightness unclouded,

Undimmed by the shadow of night.

So help us with strength undiminished

To press to the end of the way

Till, the days of our pilgrimage finished,

We dwell in Thy presence for aye!
