MORNING AND EVENING Each day in the history of Israel was to begin with the offering of a lamb of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt-offering, and each day closed with exactly the same offering (see Exodus 29: 38–42; Numbers 28: 3–8). This is a precious indication of God’s pleasure that the days of His people should be so encompassed, beginning and ending sweetly with thoughts of Jesus. May we be exercised that our days may be like this. It means that as we briefly read and pray, perhaps as we dress, we are thinking of that ‘patient, spotless One’. How refreshing, renewing, and delightful it is to come back to the perfection of Jesus as here obediently and sacrificially for the will of His Father. It maintains us in the appreciation of Himself. One so completely different from what is in the world, and it strengthens us to be here like Him.

Then as the day closes we are to return to the same delightful occupation with Him. Let our days be thus sanctified. The Father’s delight in His Beloved is constant, and He would have us to share it with Him.

The fact that the offering of the lambs was accompanied by an oblation—fine flour mingled with oil—and a drink offering, enriches the thought of engagement with Jesus and His holy character of manhood. It also shows that the Father is refreshed day by day by His saints’ fresh appreciation of Christ.
