“THE CHERUBIM OF GLORY SHADOWING THE MERCY-SEAT”
G. A. Brown
The banished pair their journey took
Beyond the garden’s bound.
No more their guileless, happy ways
Would in its groves be found.
Through dalliance with the ancient foe
They disobeyed God’s word;
Lo! at the garden’s eastern gate
Flames the cherubic sword!

When Israel, freed from Egypt’s thrall,
Traversed the desert dry,
Moses, the man of God, received
The pattern from on high.
The holy ark, in every part
With purest gold replete,
The cherubim their wings spread o’er
And faced the mercy-seat.
Then came the great atonement day,
Iniquity laid bare;
They looked upon the mercy-seat
The blood was sprinkled there!
