EPL Why do you say the glory of God in man was established in Gethsemane rather than at Calvary?

JT I include Gethsemane with Calvary. It was on the cross the Lord actually drank the cup of wrath. But it was anticipated in Gethsemane, and then He took the cup from the Father’s hand. There the pressure was on the Lord’s spirit. But of course nothing can be compared with the cross; it was there that He was forsaken of God.

RSS But the Lord went through it all in anticipation in Gethsemane.

JT I think so. The cup was full, and He fully estimated all it contained, and prayed that it might pass from Him; but He added, “nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done”.

J. Taylor (Vol. 4, p.349)

EDITOR’S NOTE OF AMENDMENT

With reference to the April 2009 issue of NOTES OF MINISTRY, lines 16–19 on page 15, the author and editor regret that they have been unable to find any reference in the published ministry of Mr. James Taylor to his having said that Christ suffered for sins twice, once anticipatively in Gethsemane and the second time actually at Calvary. This reference should therefore be deleted. Scripture states that “Christ indeed has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God”, 1 Peter 3: 18: this is rightly quoted on page 17, in lines 19 and 20, of the same issue of NOTES OF MINISTRY.
