SUNRISE
John Gray
I saw the sun, the glorious sun,
Arise from out the east;
I saw its beams, its golden beams;
My eyes enjoyed the feast.
Depressing thought, which night had brought,
Its exit quickly took,
As earth’s reply to sunlit sky
Was heard from bird and brook.
While sea gulls flocked, from Ailsa’s rock, *
White-winged, to grace the dawn,
The shimmering sea did dance to me,
Like children on a lawn.
I looked to praise in joyful lays
As robed, the shining morn
Stepped into light from out the night,
Creation to adorn.
I’ll see the Sun, the righteous Sun,
Whose warming rays shall ring
This world of sighs when He’ll arise
With healing in His wing.
When sinful blight, and earth’s dark night,
With nations’ warring din,
Shall fade away, when God the day
Of Christ shall usher in.
Then for His death let all with breath
Praise Him for evermore;
God’s Son on high, who came to die,
Shall shine on every shore.
