“HAD THEY KNOWN” (1 Corinthians 2: 8)

J. Stenhouse

God made the worlds by Him, the earth, the sun,

He did but speak a word, and it was done,

We marvel and we wonder as we see

That there in Bethlehem’s inn no room should be.

At His command the winds and waves were still,

His touch of love was blessing to the ill,

The restless mind He calmed, and broken heart,

Yet there were those who begged Him to depart.

Death’s march He halted at the gates of Nain,

And gave the widow back her son again;

Marked out unique in power, the Son of God,

The Lord of glory thus His pathway trod.

There in that house though Simon did not greet,

Nor give Him water to refresh His feet,

He sought to show him that, although in debt,

His liabilities could all be met.

But one of wisdom’s children learned His love,

That hidden wisdom come from heaven above;

She lavished all on Him, and did not cease,

Went on her way and all her paths were peace.

The princes of this world, they did not know,

A cross was all they gave Him here below;

A Prince and Saviour, now in heaven received,

We know the One in whom we have believed.

Faith’s eye beholds Him crowned with glory there,

Yes, He than all the sons of men more fair;

Just to look up and have a view of Him

Makes all the glitter of this age grow dim.

His everlasting kingdom has begun,

The present course of things will soon be run;

Soon He will by the universe be known,

Let us be here for Him; we’re not our own.
