‘TOO SATISFIED’ An owner of cattle was going round inspecting his stock. We came to one herd and at his call they ambled in a slow procession out of one field to pasture in another. As we

walked on to see another herd he remarked, ‘I doubt whether they will come when I call; they are too satisfied with their pasture’.

Are you and I, as believers, ‘satisfied with our pasture’? One of the things that should keep the believer clear of the world, and the seductive call of the god of it, is that it is not good enough for him. Could you persuade Mephibosheth to give up David’s company, and David’s bountiful table, once more to return to Lodebar (‘no pasture’)? Would the recovered younger son of Luke 15 ever again forsake the father’s affections, and the rich provision of the father’s house, for the far country? Let us give ourselves, by the Spirit, to the full enjoyment of our inheritance, so that the call of the world finds no answer in our hearts—we are too satisfied with our pasture. There is another side—the truth of the cross (Galatians 6: 14) is also to keep us from the world. May the world that crucified our Lord always be a crucified place to us, and may we be crucified to it.
