THE POWER OF GOD
C. Middleton
God, Thy power calls forth our worship,
As Thy works we contemplate,
Faith can know Thy word sufficient
All these wonders to create.
All the heavenly bodies tell it,
Held in orbit hour by hour,
Both the great and minute creatures
Witness the Creator’s power.
Then that power displayed in Jesus
In His pathway here we see;
Satan’s power gives way before Him
And his captives are set free.
He who had death’s might defeated
In the conflict of that hour,
Jesus risen; there we witness
All the greatness of God’s power.
Now the glorious Man ascended,
All in heaven His word obey;
Now His kingdom is established
Which in time He will display.
Though on earth He is rejected,
Faith can see His power appear;
Hades’ gates are not prevailing
Over His assembly here.
God attaches firmly to Him
Those subdued by Jesus’ power,
Learning more His love and kindness,
His protection every hour.
Here we learn the Spirit’s working,
Nowhere power on earth so great;
Yet He works in feeble vessels,
Those who humbly on Him wait.
Power for witness, power for service,
Power for overcoming here,
Then in access to the Father,
He the power for drawing near.
Soon the Lord will come in splendour,
‘Sun of righteousness’, He’ll rise,
All His foes shall fall before Him,
None can stand before His eyes.
Then His saints who’ve suffered with Him
Will the reigning with Him share;
Power that kept them through the suffering
Sets them in the glory there.
