“WITH ME”

It was the Lord’s desire, expressed to the Father, that we should be with Him—“that where I am they also may be with me”, John 17: 24. He knew that nothing less would satisfy the hearts of His own, so He says earlier that He would come again to receive us to Himself,

“that where I am ye also may be”, John 14: 3. The place is one thing—the Father’s house; but the assembly would never be satisfied without Himself. We must be with Him where He is, which is the greatest blessing, and the consummation of all.

So the Lord’s promise to the overcomer at Laodicea is to sit with Him in His throne. The Lord has sat down with His Father in His throne, thus inaugurating this wonderful period of grace. What wondrous equality is seen there, but His sitting down is on the basis of Himself having overcome. As Man He has overcome the great power of death and the grave. He is presented thus as the great Overcomer, having reached His present position on that ground.

He would sup with us here and we with Him, but He would have such with Him on His throne before the whole universe in the coming day wondrous answer to His grace! The thief was with Him that very day in paradise (Luke 23: 43). The one who overcomes now will be with Him soon upon His throne, and not just upon the throne but, as He says, “with me”
