A DIFFICULT ENVIRONMENT It was in a Swedish forest that we saw an astonishing sight—a large conifer growing out of a huge rock. Its roots must have penetrated through crevices in the rock and found nourishment deep down. It clearly illustrated how the work of God can flourish in very difficult circumstances—difficulties at school, at home, or at work, or, it may be, the difficulties of a local company facing smallness and isolation. The Lord Jesus grew up “as a root out of dry ground”, Isaiah 53: 2. He drew all His resources from another sphere, and those same resources are available to those who face difficult conditions as they seek to work out the truth. As we looked at that tree a brother from a very small meeting remarked that divine thoughts as to growth, spiritual prosperity, and formation are just the same for those in very limited and difficult circumstances as for those in what we might think to be more favourable positions.
