NEARNESS, OR DISTANCE? An older brother made a simple, but telling, remark in a recent reading that the nearer you get to the sun, the larger it will appear, and the closer we are to Christ, the greater He will be to us. He added that, especially with those who are nearing the end of their lives. Christ should be “everything”, as Paul says in Colossians 3: 11.

The creation illustrates this. So remote is the most distant planet, Pluto; that, as viewed from it, the sun is just like a star. That is like some believers. They belong to the Lord, they may positionally be in a circle of fellowship, but are right out on the fringe. Christ is just a distant factor in their lives. If any of us are in that kind of situation let us judge what has come in and quickly get back to Him, so that the nearness of His Person, the warmth of His love, the brightness of His glory, and the blessedness of His control may once again be happily experienced—as well as the joys of the circle of which He is the centre.
