MUSINGS
“YIELD YOURSELVES TO GOD” As I sat by the bedside of a beloved dying brother it impressed me that all the faculties and members of his body, which had been used for the service and pleasure of God and His people over many years, had now almost failed.
The long course of faithful service was nearly over and he was about to enter into the joy of his Lord (Matthew 25: 21).
Most of those who read these lines will be well and strong. How are we using what God has given us? Are we just employing our strength and abilities for our own pleasure and enjoyment? As redeemed, all we have belongs to the Lord. Let us early in life answer to the claims of the love of Christ and devote ourselves to His will and pleasure. The fruit and result will be eternal, in contrast to the passing vanity of self-pleasing. Paul says, “Yield yourselves to God as alive from among the dead, and your members instruments of righteousness to God”, Romans 6: 13.
We have a fine example in Barnabas at the end of Acts 4. He owned land. He could have cultivated it, or built on it. Instead he sold it and laid the proceeds at the feet of the apostles.
You do not wonder that he was given the surname ‘Barnabas’, meaning ‘son of consolation’.
May we be constrained by the love of Christ to hold what we have for Him, and thus be a comfort to His people.
