concerning God’s Son has in mind that these powers of evil

might be broken in our lives. I may be speaking to one in

whom there is an unbroken power of evil. God would help you

to overcome that. It will be overcome by the knowledge and

power of Jesus Christ as Lord. I would appeal that we may

more readily submit to Jesus Christ as Lord. It is a great need

at this moment when everything in the world is tending

towards radicalism, radical powers rising which will finally

culminate in the man of sin who exalts himself against all that

is called God and attempts to take the place of God. There is

no thought of coming under lordship with him; he is the kind of

man that is going up, whereas Christianity involves the kind of

man that is prepared to go down, to go down under the

blessed touch of recognizing that Jesus Christ is Lord.

I say that because it gives us a clue as to whose hearts the

apostle is speaking about. When he says “our hearts” it is not

really the heart of every man and every woman—“our hearts”

means hearts which have bowed to the claims of Jesus Christ

our Lord. So Paul says,

“because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the

Holy Spirit which has been given to us”. The Holy Spirit is

given to persons who are subject; He is given to obedient

persons; persons who have recognized, and do recognize in

their lives day by day, that Jesus Christ is Lord. I feel the need

of simply pressing that, beloved brethren. Is Jesus Christ your

Lord?—this kind of Man. There

are other kinds of men; this world is full of them. God’s eye is

not on them except that He longs that they may be blessed.

God’s eye is on Jesus Christ, this kind of Man, a Man who was

found here in obedience and devotion, at tremendous cost to

Himself, to the will of God.

So God is operating in the glad tidings of His Son to bring

about obedience and submission to Him. There is no one
