OUR RESOURCE
OUR RESOURCE
I hope you are like the bees in winter, feeding on your endless stores. I astonished some one lately by shewing that the habit of opening your Bible for a text is really looking for a sign. You are putting it in the place of present direction from the Lord - the impression of His mind, which He would give you in communion with Himself; getting into the current of His thoughts for the moment is far more than finding a text of Scripture to direct you. It is most deeply interesting to be in concert with the Lord touching His interests at any given time; as the child comes to his father’s [p. 474] study in order to be with him, and being in his company becomes by degrees occupied with what his father speaks of and in what his father is interested.
Often the works of God in the first creation so invite our attention that we are not ready to be engaged with the things that are unseen and eternal. Beholding the Lord’s glory we are transformed, we are occupied with the new acquisition and not with our loss of the old.
Change of scene affects us in a very marked way. If there is any element of the world in your heart, perhaps suppressed by circumstances, so that your appearance, without any intention, is better than your reality, the day will come when like Lot, the green fields will carry you away!
What is the difference between a soul who finds his resource in service, and another who finds it in the Lord Himself? You do not make the Lord your resource until you know Him as Solomon.
