LETTER

[p. 497] LETTER

We learn love from God. He loved us when there was nothing in us to love. But He “sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (1 John 4: 9). He does the highest thing, at the greatest cost, when we were altogether undeserving. He sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. The aim of true love is our perfection. It seeks not merely to serve or to comfort but that we should be altogether suited to the Lord. It can have no lower standard. Love always thinks of others because the Lord thinks of them. I find when I am happy as to myself in His grace, I pray easily for others. May your heart abound in the knowledge of His love for you, and as it does you will love the saints. “If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us” (1 John 4: 12).

I deplore the concessions they are making at —— in order to retain some who really have not accepted the christian calling. They are converted, and out of system, but have not apprehended in faith the new order to which we are called; hence, concession is only confirming them in their carnal theory. It is Ezra 4 over again. The Samaritans are the greatest opposers.

When one reviews alone before the Lord the greatness of His calling, its magnificence in all its bearings, one can only in grief of heart turn to Him to defend His own. But many do not see the calling. How important are the words: “The spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him” (Ephesians 1: 17). It is not mere knowledge - “God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2: 10).
