THE HEART LISTENING
THE HEART LISTENING
I have felt so happy in the sense of being occupied simply for the Lord and with Him, feeling at times as if I had nothing else to do or to think of, but as He wished or directed me. It is only a heart that can satisfy a heart, and when we come near to Him we learn how His heart can satisfy us. The one who is occupied with being useful uses Christ as a means to an end, but the one who is occupied with winning Christ is expressing Him in his ways, and is truly and divinely useful, though never as ostensibly so to man as the former.
The Lord asks us to do what will please Him to satisfy His own love for us. He expects us to know what love is, and if we know Him we do know what love is, then His commandments are not grievous. His commandments only mark the pathway which would keep us near Him. Perhaps the tenderest word the Lord ever uttered was the sentence to Peter after his heart was reassured in Christ’s love: “Follow thou me”. The Lord can propose nothing higher to me than that.
The Lord keep you full of His interest about you. The more we are assured of the love and interest of anyone whose love is worth having, the more the heart rests in it and finds satisfaction in Christ’s boundless satisfaction; and because of the grace furnished to us by contact with Him - our life - the more our response to Him. Thus feelings of the highest order and practice of the most genuine kind spring from the same source.
May you be kept as His and for Him, and nothing else!
